Richard was born and brought up in Hull.

He graduated in Architecture from the University of Westminster in 1990 and received his Diploma with distinction from The Bartlett (UCL) and SCI-Arc (Los Angeles) in 1993.

Whilst working for Will Alsop, Richard formed Surface in 1996, with philosopher Jeremy Weate and architect Kristen Whittle, winning the Shinkenchiku-Sha Residential Design Award in Japan in that year. At this time Richard and Jeremy taught History & Theory at the Bartlett and the Architecture Association.

Whilst continuing as Director of Surface Architects, Richard has become involved in a number of initiatives in Hull. Having won the Fruit Market Regeneration project in 2007, Richard is now the Design Champion for Hull BSF (Building Schools for the Future) program with Esteem / HCC. He is also an active member of the Arc Design Review Panel in Hull. The Surface_Hull studio opened in 2011.

As well as being a keen promoter of Hull, Richard has a reputation for exploiting links between music, philosophy and architecture.

Hi Richard, couldn’t resist having seen your recent article in the Hull Mail re Beverley Road regeneration. Excellent.. so nice to see that you have done so well in your career.
Its also nice that music is still very much in your thinking. I have been a music teacher since the early 90′s first as head of music in Brigg and for the last 16 years working at York college. Most of my time now is as MD for musical theatre courses. I’m still into the jazz (played at Hull Truck last November with a band) Have composed experimental and jazz pieces but now want to write my first musical (a short thriller)
    All the best

    Nigel
